Caden turns 20 months - Woodlands TX Child Photographer

This past weekend, my son turned 20 months old. I usually miss these milestones, but this one I actually captured.

Just like many of you, I am continually amazed at how quickly these little "people" grow up. Mine came out grown up. One day they arrive into our lives and then the next they are attending school. So days like this, that I can spend with him and see all of the new things that he has learned, I feel so blessed.

Caden is now talking all of the time, to anyone or anything that will listen. He runs everywhere. He is testing boundaries constantly, which I guess they do at these age. He is so loving, blowing kisses and offering hugs to everyone, even strangers. You have to love the toddler innocence.

So I thought I would share a couple of photos from this weekend. He allowed me about 2 minutes, with his helicopter. Just enough time for a smile and a few beautiful serious shots. I LOVE this boy.

Peekaboo, Mr. H is 1! - Houston TX Child Photographer

Today I met Mr. H and his family at Market Street for their final session of their Tippy Toes plan. I'm so sad, as I have so enjoyed getting to know his mom and Mr. H. This year has gone by so fast! You might recognize Mr. H from his previous sessions. Newborn, 3 month, 6 month and 9 months.

And speaking of fast, that is one adjective to describe Mr. H. Good thing I had my running shoes on. Even thought he wasn't walking yet. Those knees served him well. He wasn't too sure about the grass, but once he got going, he was off. But as long as his brother was helping me out, playing peekaboo with him, he was a happy camper. Thanks Mr. P!

Sunset Love - Woodlands TX Couples Photographer

Last night I had I met a good friend and his girlfriend at East Shore for a sunset photoshoot. Perfect lighting, led to some perfect portraits. I was under some major pressure, as D is a professional photographer himself! But they were fantastic and we had a great time. We goofed around and played in the grass. Getting some formal shots, goofy shots and most of all, some re-inactments of some famous movies.

You guys were great. Thanks for playing along and the rest will be done in around a week. Enjoy your sneak peak!

1. How long have you guys been together? A seemingly long two and a half months.

2. Where did you guys meet? At a bar (classy) during a motorcycle meet (even classier.)

3. What is your favorite thing to do together? Nap or read. We're kinda boring but that's ok.

4. Any nicknames for each other? We all want the scoop! I call her beast or more recently

mammal. She finds neither of these amusing. She tends to just call me "honey," which at varying points I'm sure either means bee excrement or that she actually likes me.

5. Five things that you want us to know about you guys as a couple. Clean things only. :)

We tend to be very laid back and "boring," but that's fine. We enjoy each others company and needn't be engaged in a conversation or specific activity to do so.

We are both terribly wanting of directional or decision making abilities. Not only can't we find our way around the corner, we have the complete and total inability to decide on anything. This is particularly exciting when we're figuring out where to go eat.

It seems like we've known each other for a lot longer than the little time we've been together.

We're having a baby! Both of us are very excited. We want a little girl. I (D) am also a photographer and the amount of black mail pictures I will have of momma and baby will be unreal.

We act completely childish around each other some times. It helps us enjoy the little things!

Bonus: I've (D again) never actually had my picture taken in a professional setting before. I'm very much terrified and looking forward to having Kara produce these beautiful moments for us. I became a photographer so I wouldn't have to be in front of the lens!

Full Time Fun - Woodlands TX photographer

For those that know me, you know that for the last 4 years, I have been running this studio on my nights and weekends. Not by choices, as this is my passion, but by necessity.

Well... Today was my first full day of full time work at Kara Powell Photography! Yippee!

Yes, I am now a full time employee of my own studio. Which means, yes. You can book your sessions during the week, as well as during the weekends. I will be opening my new branches soon (more to come on this). And the new blog will be launching soon as well. There will be a lot of new and exciting things coming your way! I'm going to be catering more to the mom.

So for all of you that encouraged me along the way, thank you. I am hoping that this will be the start to a long and really exciting journey. But most of all, I hope that I can help many of you capture those fleeting moments of your families. As, I know how quickly they go by.

Here is to many more productive days ahead.

August Kute Photo of the Month - Woodlands TX Child Photographer

The heat was on this month, but this little one didn't show it a bit! She was all smiles the whole session. Whether it was her tummy shot, tutu dance or slowing down for one last smile in her hat. She was a champ. We always have a great time with Miss C. Now choosing which shot for the actual Kute photo was the hard part. So I went for a classic, which I NEVER do. The full on smile shot. But it was simple and classic. And something that this mom will want to remember for years to come, so I thought I would select it for the shot of the month. Simple is good sometimes.

An evening in the park - Woodlands Family Photographer

Last night, I met one of my clients that has been with me from almost the very beginning. I just LOVE them. They are so easy going and I so enjoy getting to see their family grow over the years. I shot Ms. R's first birthday, Mr. E's maternity, Mr. E's newborn and you probably recognize them from a recent mommy and me session.

But when their mommy called and said they hadn't had a full family session EVER. Well, I just had to change that. And after talking, I found out that they hadn't had any couple photos since their wedding! Well, you can't have that. So we took care of that as well.

Now, those of you who have toddlers, know that it is difficult to capture a family photo at this age. But I think they will be pleasantly surprised, I didn't post them here, but I have some good ones. You guys enjoy your week and the photos should be ready in about a week.

1. How old are your kids? E is 1 yr and R is 2 1/2

2. What is the best thing about your kids at this age? They are absorbing so much, everyday there is something new they are doing or saying.

3. What is the most challenging? Just keeping up with 2 toddlers that are 16 months apart is a challenge but I think dealing with severe food allergies at the same time is the most difficult thing.

4. Do you have any advise to new moms out there? Buy a dust buster!!!

5. What is a perfect day with your family? The perfect day with our family is any day that we get to spend the entire day together as a family. We are always so busy there seems to be errands or projects that need done but the best days are ones where we really don't get anything "done" and just spend time together, going to the park or hanging out at home grilling and playing in the yard.

6. What are some hopes and dreams you have for your kids? I just hope my children grow up to be happy, well adjusted, independent, open minded adults.

School's back in Session - Woodlands TX Child Photographer

With the start of a new school year, comes hesitation, excitement, the smell of new crayons, lots of money being shelled out for school supplies, etc. A lot of my clients are getting their little ones ready for the first day of school on Monday. So I thought I would put a little bug in your ear about school scrapbooks. I know you guys have tons of time on your hands to do this for each and everyone of your children!

But I do know that you take a ton of snapshots of your kids. Especially on the first day of school. So here are some ideas to extend that notion. Some of these won't take any time at all and can be done online.

1. Take a photo of your child every year on the first day of school (and the last day, too, if you want). Try to take the photo in the same spot, or near a certain item (a tree, for example) each year—you’ll really notice how much your child has grown each year! For another fun idea, have your child hold up fingers to indicate what grade he/she is in.
2. Take a photo of your child as he/she gets on the school bus for the first time.
3. Take photos of your child in his/her classroom, sitting at his/her desk, with his/her teacher, and outside the school. You can do this at your school’s open house before school starts or on the first day of school.
4. Your child will probably bring home lots of artwork and school papers that you’ll want to keep. However, it can be an organizational nightmare to store all of those loose papers. Take a photo of your child holding their artwork and put all of those photos into a book you can print online (like Snapfish).
5. Create a series of fun questions to ask your child every year—things like “What is your favorite subject?”, “What is your favorite thing to eat for lunch?”, “Who is your best friend in school?”, etc. Ask the same questions every year, record the answers (or, have your child write down the answers if they are old enough!), and include them in his/her school scrapbook. It will be fun to see how their answers change as they get older!
6. Have your child write his/her name on a piece of cardstock and include that in his/her school scrapbook, too. You’ll get to see how his/her handwriting changes throughout the years!

Don't forget, scrapbooks don't have to be made with scissors and glue. They can be done online in a few minutes for those of us with not a lot of time. And the kids LOVE looking at them. Grandparents like them too. So don't forget to get out that camera and document the small and big details of that important first day.

All that She Could Be - Tomball Tx Newborn Photographer

In the wee hours of this morning, I had the pleasure of chatting with a lovely family. Miss B, had made her entry into this world just two short weeks ago and I took her newborn portraits at 6am this morning, with no coffee. She did great, she is definitely a morning girl. She was all that she could be, and so were all of us! Thanks for all of your help you guys.

This army family was fantastic and I have to say, one of the most fascinating families I have chatted with in a long time. I learned a lot from them. Between chats about Iraq, politics and of course Miss B, we did manage to get some fabulous portraits done of this sweet little girl. And her name does fit!

Fabulous Find - Houston TX Photographer

You guys know that I love props! I need a bigger house just to hold them all. So when I came across this on Etsy, I just had to order one for Caden. And when it came, I was not disappointed.

Caden loves his monkey ball. And I had the chance a few weekends ago to photograph him playing around with it. If you would like a ball of your very own (which I would highly recommend, especially for high energy toddlers), go visit Handmadepretties. This shop has all kinds of great "Giant balls" as they call them. My Sweet Pea is 19 months - Woodlands Toddler Photographer

A few days ago, my son, Caden turned 19 months. Now if any of you have friends that are photographers, you might have heard of PCS or Photographers Child Syndrome. It is basically the idea that any photographer's child hates to be photographed. And yes, my son has it bad. The poor thing has had my camera in his face since he was born. I tried to limit his exposure to it, but I just can't help it. And I have to admit that I have been so busy with the studio that I have missed documenting his 17 and 18 month birthdays.

So you would think that he would have been OK with today's adventure. But... I guess the closer we get to the age of 2, the harder it is going to be. But I did manage to get 2 good ones. This is my sweet pea at 19 months. We waited a long time for you, and I guess I can wait awhile longer for a good photo.

New Goals for New studio - Houston TX Photographer

So as a lot of you know, August is the start of a new time for me and my studio. I am kicking off all kinds of new things, products and ideas. I am taking what you have told me works and building on it. Taking what you said didn't and throwing it out.

I thought one of the best ways to build a great foundation is to sit down and write out some goals. And what is the best way to hold myself accountable? Publish them! Oh and there is no timeline on these. Just hopefully get to them by August of next year.

So here are the new goals for KP Photo on going. See what you think. Some are personal, you are steal them! And some are business related. I wanted to share them, so that we can all better ourselves at the same time. And frankly you guys can help me stick to them. So it is a long post, but I have a lot of goals!

Building Relationships
1. Spend at least 1 weekend a month doing “nothing” with my husband
2. Get in touch with and/or visit a friend I haven’t seen in years
3. Write a real letter to someone once a week for 3 months
4. Meet a neighbor I don’t already know
5. Make 3 new friends
6. Really get to know my studio clients – relationship building

Charity/community
1. Volunteer my photography services to a community project or a family in need
2. Host Mamartazzi technical photo club
3. Donate old books to local book drive
4. Do an anonymous favor or ‘pay it forward’
5. Donate portrait shoot to charity auction
6. Purge closet of anything not worn in last 2 years, clean out garage!

Sitting Pretty at 6 months - Woodlands TX Baby Photographer

Today, Miss C came by for her 6 month session. You might be saying to yourself, didn't I just see her on the blog? Why yes! We just did a family session for her grandparents. But today was special, as it was all about her and she was in a great mood. So tutu and all, she showed off her new moved of sitting up and pushing up. She is doing great. I'm going to save the tutu photos for tomorrow, but here are some of my favorites from today. You guys enjoy. How old is your child? She is 6 months
How has she changed from the last time she was in? She has become so much more interactive and is starting to really show her little personality.
What is your favorite things that she does? She does little sit-ups when she is on her back trying to see what is going on. You see her little head popping up with a big smile.

What is the thing that you find most challenging? NAPS!!! The child doesn't sleep during the day.

What is she really into right now? She is into anything that she can get her little hand to...she loves to grab and tear things.
What is something that you just love to do with her? I love to play peek a boo. You can do it over and over and the surprise never seems to wear off!
What is your favorite thing that she does, body part or noise that she makes? (I love this question!) She makes this little throat gurgle...I think she believes she is talking!

July Kute Photo of the Month - Child Photographer Houston TX

August is here, so that means it is time to choose the Kute Photo of July. It seems like it was only yesterday that this month was starting out, and now it is over. During this month I shot the M family twice. Once for this mama's maternity shoot and then for Mr. L's newborn session. I just knew that they were going to be my Kute Photo of the month, because they had so many fantastic photos! Who could choose? A great family, loving home and relaxed atmosphere that Mr. L is just going to love. So after looking through all of the photos from both sessions, I had to pick just one. Oh this is going to be hard. After spending many hours with Ms. M and Mr. L my clients do become family. Some shots take a little longer to "get" than others. And then some just fall into place.

I personally LOVE taking newborns outside. Houston heat and newborns mix in my opinion and this little guy was no different. He loved it. So I chose this shot for my Kute Photo of the month. His little smile, the beautiful foliage. Perfection. You guys enjoy the wall print of this image and the gift certificate! Congrats!

Ties and Tutus Mini Session Saturday - Woodlands TX Childrens Photographer

I am pleased to announce the start of Mini Sessions at the studio!

Our first mini session is this Saturday and the 14th and it is called Ties and Tutus.

Bring your little one for a short session to just play! These are great for updating your photo wall, or just getting some photos done in a more economic fashion. We can provide the Ties or Tutus, or your can bring your own. FYI, I have over 10 tutus in the studio, all sizes and colors! This session will be 30 minutes in length and will cost only a $30 session fee. This fee does not include any prints or digital files. I am offering a special mini session package and it is at a huge discount! This would normally cost $120 at my studio, but on this Saturday only, it is your for $50. This package includes an 8x10, 2 5x7s and a page of wallets for $50. All of these prints have to be of the same image.

So come play with me at the studio, as this is going to be Tutu fun! Best for all ages! Call or email me to set up you session, as sessions are limited to 5 per Saturday. And once they are full, we are done till next year.

Christening Coming Soon! - Woodlands TX Baby Photographer

This afternoon, I met the sweetest little boy. Oh, I could have kept him. I met them at the car and his mama just handed him right to me. And he was happy as a clam just to hang out with me the rest of the session, when he wasn't checking out the studio.

He was at the studio today to start his Tippy Toes plan. And perfect timing, as he is being Christened in two weeks, so this dapper little guy needed his portrait taken in this super fantsy outfit. I don't think anyone has ever been this dressed up in my studio, so he wins the award. He looked so nice. He will be a stunner at his Christening. We even too a few photos with his big sister, whom I learned is a connoisseur of Ramen noodles. Yummy, I'm going to try her special recipe this week. Thanks Miss G. Enjoy the sneak peak.

Personalized Baby Block - Houston TX Newborn Photographer

Last week, when I shot Mr. L, he had the cutest block that someone gave them as a gift. It was just beautiful and I'm sure he will have it for a very long time. Well, he will probably chew, throw, hide, sit, etc with it for a very long time. But you know what I mean.

So I did a couple of extra shots of him with it. I especially love the shot of his tiny fingers around it. Oh, they are only this tiny for such a very short time.

BFF LOL - Woodlands TX Teen Photographer

Sometimes I get to do something a little different. Shooting pregnant mamas and babies is what I do. So having teenagers in the studio is a switch and I almost didn't know what to do! But eventually we got on a role and ended up with a bunch of fabulous photos. Shooting teenagers that take directions is so much easier than babies and toddlers. :)

Gifts for Grandma - Woodlands TX, Child Photographer

Tonight I met one of my Tippy Toes families out at a local park to take some family photos. They wanted to get a jump on the holidays and take some photos of the grandkids, while they were all together this week. (A possible gift for the grandparents for the holidays!) What a fabulous idea! And what a lucky set of grandparents, as these cute girls were so nice, had so much fun together (even though it was so hot) and even though the little one was so tired, I managed to a get few good ones. Thanks for hanging in there ladies!

What is the occasion for this photo session? A Christmas present for their grandparents. The oldest of the group goes to college in West Virginia so it is rare to have them together.

Tell me the names and ages of the children. K - 21; B - 9; C - 6 mos.

What do you love best about the kids? I love the energy that my little ones have.

When the kids get together, what are some of the best things that happen? K is a bit older so the younger ones look up to her. To have the older cousin play with them and just be silly is a lot of fun.

What do the grandparents do with the kids that they just love? The grandparents have a farm with horses, dogs, cats, donkey, etc. Getting to go to their house and play with the animals is something they look forward to.

I welcomed in a new member of the KP Photo family today. Mr. L was born last week to one of our sexy mammas. You might remember her maternity shoot that I posted a few weeks back. But today was all about Mr. L. He was so cooperative! A good two hours of photos and not one peep. A photographers dream. So these parents are going to have a hard time choosing! What do you find most challenging? Recovering from a c-section and breastfeeding

What was the last time you slept longer than 2 hours? And be honest. Or can you remember? At the hospital, when breastfeeding failed and the nurses offered to take him for the night.

What is your favorite thing about him? When he falls asleep in my arms on my chest, when he smiles, or makes a funny noise to get our attention.

Do you have any words of wisdom for other new mom's to be out there? Some baby books are boring and some are great but you forget everything since the baby hasn't arrived yet. Focus on everything you need to know during the FIRST WEEK of baby's life. Like what their sleeping habits are supposed to be and not just that they sleep all the time. How often they wet/soil a diaper and not just that diaper changes occur often. What exactly you need to do for breastfeeding and that it's more challenging than it seems. Other things beyond the first week are important too but the first week was the most challenging for me just because I'm new and honestly did not know what to expect or what I'm doing.

What do you imagine your baby being when he or she grows up? No idea... but I hope he's good at math. (This mamma is in the financial realm when she isn't doing her motherly duties.)

What are you most looking forward to teaching him or doing with him in the future? With mom, baking. With dad, sports.

What is one wish you have for your baby in the future? To become a genuinely good person despite all the influences in today's society and to be good to his mom (and dad but more mom).

Miss C has been seen around the blog quite a bit. I took her photos before she arrived, her newborn, 3, 6, 9 and now here is her 1st year photo debut. She has grown into a beautiful little thing. So fully of personality and man can she swim! I need to take Caden over and have her teach him.

I met Miss C and her family at their home on Friday evening for a fantastic evening of swimming. She showed off her love of the water and we got some beautiful shots of everyone involved. Enjoy the sneak peak you guys!

Thirteen going on 30 - Houston TX Teen Photographer

You might recognize Ms. E from the family shoot I posted last week. We extended the family shoot and did her 13th birthday photos at the end. She was a trooper and hung in there in the heat with us. Climbed rocks in her heels, sat in dirt in her white dress, sweated all over the place, etc. She now knows what it is like to be a model. Definitely not glamorous. But I got some fabulous photos, so everything turns out for the best. Although her mom probably won't be happy, because a lot of them don't look 13, sorry mom. :( I tried. They just grow up way too fast. Ms. E, try to act young for your mom for another year or so. You guys enjoy the sneaky!

I know that a lot of my families carry iPhones or iPod touches. So I thought I would pass on this information that I read on one of my clients Facebook posts. It was super helpful and thought some of you might enjoy it.

Caden, at 18 months just loves my iPhone, mostly the Baby Piano app, Matching Zoo app, Vehicles apps and I Hear Eww app. They can keep him entertained for about 10-15 minutes which is a lot for an 18 month old with attention issues. :)

Grandkids Galore! - Woodlands TX Family/Tween Photographer

Yesterday morning, I had the pleasure of meeting an extended family for a fantastic occasion. A lot of families get together for reunions, but rarely invite a photographer along to capture a large family photo. These are usually the photographs that you will cherish for a long time, because it takes so much effort to get all of you together at one instance in time, especially now a days.

I posted the large family photo up for the sneak peak of this session, but we also took photos of each individual family, individual couple and child, as well as grandma J and all of her grandkids (see below). I had a blast, even though it was really hot! Wish I had a videocamera, you guys were hilarious! Thank goodness for those misters!

Who belongs to whom and ages?

E and J(grandma and daughter), M (son) and F his wife, and their 2 kids - T -15 and K 10 (grandkids), E (daughter) and Brandon, her husband and their 3 kids - C 4, C 2 and C 9 months (grand kids).

What is your favorite thing about the kids? my children....pride of who they have become. My son owns a successful business and a great husband and dad, My daughter is an extremely accomplished, too much to list and a wonderful mother, and wife. Emma her sensitivity.. Both daughter and son in laws...I love who they are and their ability to relate to my son and daughter.

GRANDKIDS - T mature, has become a great person to be with, K- smart, many talents, and loves her gramma, Car, - my daughters 1st born, so there is a special bond, he is lively and brill iant, Cl - I love to watch her love on her brothers. she is a princess and lets everyone know it. she reminds me of my sister who died in 91, so she warms my heart. C the baby...I have to hold back tears, he is the sweetest, calmest baby, he will just sit on your lap and watch the world go by...I think is will be the affectionate one.

If you could have one wish for the kids? Know Christ and live a life that all know they are a child of God

What is the best thing about seeing each of them grow up? WWho they are becoming...but I find it sad as they get older..

What do you think each of these kids will be when they grow up?Tyler says he want to go into the marines and college. K wants to be a Dr. E - she is still feeling her way around..but has leaned toward being a teacher, she has a gift with children. The 3 little ones..it is hard to say...

When all of us get together, you can describe it as... Why? Pure Joy....I love having everyone together. I did not have a crowd growing up and think seeing everyone together, hearing their voices playing is something I love.

Triple the Blessings - Woodlands TX Multiples Photographer

About two months ago, a sweet momma called me for her maternity shoot, and I was so excited, because she was expecting triplets. But the day before her shoot, her water broke and the three little ones arrived early.

So I have been keeping up with this sweet new little family and just recently they all made it home, after almost a month in the NICU! You guys are troopers!

And man are they blessed! With triple the blessings, brings triple the diapers, bottles, sleepless nights, etc. But it also brings three times the sweet grunty noises, cute little toes, funny stories and cuddly babies to hold. So I was beside myself excited when I got to shoot these little ones today! They did so well, especially when we ventured outside in the warmth. Enjoy the sneaky you guys and I hope they slept well after all of the excitement.

And all of you moms out there. Leave some positive vibes below for this momma! Come on, she is handling 3 babies like a pro! You guys should have seen her. Fabulous. I can barely manage my one child. You inspire me. :)

Last night I swam down to West U to meet with a Sexy Mama to do her maternity shoot. We needed to do it quickly, as she is due today! I know, can you imagine? She still had enough energy to move, let alone look cute for me. But she did fantastic and look at this super cute photos. Hopefully baby L will be arriving soon.

She was so patient with me, trying all kinds of new sexy mama things! I had so much fun! And I think she will be pleased. But the great part is, the first time mom has nothing to worry about when it comes to patience. She has plenty!

I saw a small boy wearing the new designer diapers this weekend at a 4th of July parade, although he had the denim ones on. Now all be it super cute, I'm not sure how I feel about these.

Now, don't get me wrong, if I had all the money in the world, Caden would probably have all 11 styles, but since we don't, he doesn't.

So I wanted to throw it out there. How do you mommies feel about the new luxury diapers? Cool and fun or out of control?

Confessions of a bad mom - Woodlands Baby Photographer

Yesterday, as I drove home from work, I was sad. I looked into my rear view mirror at something I swore I would never see in my own car (an 18 month old watching a video). And then I started thinking about the life I live today. It has a lot of things in it that I thought would never happen. Actually I told myself, "When and if I ever have kids, I will never do ..." The list was long. I have included some here, as I'm hoping I'm not the only bad mom out there. The blog has been quiet lately and I'm needing some moral support.

I think that all of those hopes and dreams, while pregnant are fantastic. And please, keep dreaming them! I'm sure that there are some fantastic moms out there that can pull some, if not all of these things off. It just wasn't in the cards for me. Maybe on the next baby. :)

So here is my list of confessions for being a bad mom. This is for all of you that have asked me how I do it all...
I swore I would never... Then I ....
I would never have an epidural That was the best thing ever invented. LOVED it, I would have married it and had it's babies!
I would never speed with by baby in the car When the baby is screaming, that means speed up to get to the next stop sign so I can feed him or reach the pacifier!
I would never try to multitask and hand things to my baby while driving, it is dangerous.
It is very dangerous, that is why I have everything very organized and well placed around me and him in the car for close access and finding by "feel".
I would never have my child sleep on his stomach Caden has slept on him tummy every night since he was 3 days old
I would never let my child go into a store without pants on Caden has done it several times
I would never let my child eat fast food Caden does it at least twice a week
I would never let me child run around naked Caden loves it! LOVES it! Could this be a bad sign?
I would never buy a car, just for the DVD player. Yes, I did. And yes, I use it every morning and afternoon on the way to and from work. I feel dirty even writing that. But he only watches Little Einstein, does that make it better?
I would never put my child to bed just because I was tired. Ha! Do they ever get tired? Mama needs a break to, sorry Caden.
I would never put work before my child, especially since it took so long to finally get him. Well, I'm really working on work/life balance. And I actually do a pretty good job at this. Life does come first, but a lot of times this means I'm up until midnight. And Caden get's to be a model, which he isn't thrilled about, but he does enjoy the tutus. :)

So even though Caden might only see the back of my head for hours at a time in the car, or think that the computer is attached to my arms, I hope that he ultimately doesn't think I'm a bad mom. As mom's we can all find our own ways of telling our children that we love them. It might be a special song, special time spent just with them or making their favorite food. But my favorite is just spending some time with him just "being". Not really doing much of anything. He knows that I'm there and that is all that matters.

So today, whether a good or bad mom, go spend some quality time with your kids!

The winner of June's session was easy. Even though this momma had to work really hard during this session to get these effortless smiles, she made it look and seem so easy! She was so relaxed. We had such a good time talking and hanging out while she walked Miss M into slumber. Eventually, she was out and I had the photos I was looking for. And even along the way, we got some keepers! Great job mom!

Now the hard part! Choosing just 1. It was a hard choice, but I think this one is just too telling of the relationship of Miss M and her momma. They were having too much fun. There is just something about a mom and her daughter. And one day, she will look back on this photo (maybe when she has a daughter of her own) and she was reminisce of the days she spent with her mom. How fantastic. I love capturing something special like this, that people will look back on in the future. It makes my day worth while!

So congrats and your print and photo credits are on their way!

I Heart Faces Pets - Woodlands TX Fur Baby Photographer

I had a lot of great comments about last weeks contest submission, and this week's topic touched me, so I felt like I needed to enter again this week. Even though my focus in on maternity and the very young, I was thinking the other day. When I was going through my 6 years of infertility, my fur babies WERE my babies. I had a 120 lb golden retriever (Paddy), who was my best friend through it all. She passed away almost 2 years ago and I still to this day can not bare to think about her. And 2 cats, who could care less. (All of you cat owners know what I'm talking about.) It hit me the other day, fur babies are just as special as real babies. Why not treat them this way?

The photo above is a special golden to me. PeeJay. She is getting up there in age and the wisdom is there in her eyes.

This hot summer morning, I met a friend of mine (Amy, her fantastic tutu business is here) and her lovely kids at Creekside lake for their photoshoot. We were expecting a beautiful sunrise, cool morning and perfect photo opps. Well, you know that things don't always go as planned. Instead we arrived to steamy, full sun, no fountain and random construction barrels in the lake! So we improvised! I hope you guys were too disappointed. So we hid in the shade for most of the photos. I learned so much about this sweet little family. Full of energy (glad I wore my tennis shoes) and ready to explore every inch of the park. We even managed to get a ton of really good photos for mom, in between playing. Here are just a few. It was great meeting the little ones today. Can't wait to show you the rest.

So I was thinking today. Being pregnant, is not the most sexy time of a woman's life. I probably don't have to tell most of you, but you don't feel 100%.

I Heart Faces Teens - Woodlands TX Teen Photographer

I usually don't enter these, but I get them every week...

So I thought I would give it a try and join in on the fun! Teen and especially tweens are so much fun to photograph. They are so honest, no nonsense. You can't play the usual silly games, as you can with toddlers. You have to be "cool", whatever that is today.

So when I get the rare chance to photograph a teen, I jump at the chance. To determine my "coolness factor." :)

I wanted to enter this contest this week, for two reasons. One to challenge myself to get out there! And for two, because my orginal tween model is turning 15 today! So here is a shout out to Colette, who is no longer little. She will probably cringe when she sees this photo, but you have to enjoy the past! And I personally love this one! Happy Father's Day! - Woodlands TX Child photographer

As you all know, today is Father's day! Congrats to all of you dads that are out there. I saw on the news that this is the 100 year anniversary of Father's day. So that is exciting.

Well, it is only our 2nd Father's day. And unfortunately Chris had to catch an early flight to Vegas this week. Caden missed him terribly. But instead, we had grandpa to play with today! Just as good, and sometimes even better.

So we had a fabulous day of playing with the dogs and just hanging out. Even spent some time in the sprinkler. Some of you might notice that they have matching t-shirts from the Blue Bell factory. Too cute! And yes, they do get cranky without their Blue Bell.

But we wanted to share a photo and send a Happy Father's day note to all of our clients and soon to be clients out there. Enjoy those quiet, silly or whatever you just love about your kids today. They grow up way too fast. Soon, they will be calling you wishing you a Happy Father's day with a child of their own.

Infectious Smiles Ahead - Woodlands TX Baby Photographer

I photograph a lot of kids. Some good, some not so good. But every once and a while I get to photograph friends. And that is a special type of session. These cuties are like family. I see them everyday, where Caden goes to daycare. Having that personal connection/relationship with the kids does help, as I knew what they would and would not do already. The best thing was, I knew how super cute they could be, which is always the question at hand. And I got to get to know their mom a little better, whom I usually never see, unfortunately.

I absolutely love my job! When I get to meet parents during a maternity session, get to know them. Then continue on during a newborn session with their new family. Seeing them grow as parents. Learning all kinds of new things. Life can not be better!

You might recognize some of the features of this new little guy. He is a new addition to beautiful little family that I shot their maternity session lately. His mommy was also chosen as one of our Kute Photos of the month. During his first photo shoot, he did swimmingly! I was quite surprised that all of my tiny baskets were not going to work for this big boy! But we found some great things that did work just perfect. Mr. M showed me his fishy face, his big beautiful eyes and eventually fell asleep when I got boring. He is beautiful you guys. Enjoy the sneak peak.

On the move at 9 months! - Woodlands TX Baby Photographer

Also on Saturday morning, one of my favorite Tippy Toes members came over for his 9 month session. My gosh, these babies are growing too fast! Here is a trip down his first 9 months. Newborn, 3 months, and 6 months. And now he is officially on the move. Crawling, standing and so, so happy! We had so much fun as always. Can't wait to see him running the next time. Enjoy you guys!

Miss M's Morning with Mommy - Spring TX Baby Photographer

This Saturday, I met with Miss M and her mommy in the morning. You might recognize them from Miss M's newborn session, now 2 months ago. Gosh time flies.

They came by for a mommy and me session or sometimes I call is a Madonna session. Miss M did so well. Staying awake at the beginning and then she just couldn't take it anymore. It is hard being beautiful. She fell asleep and I just kept snapping away. Her mommy was just too at ease. Just beautiful. Here are two of my favorites and a short interview with Miss M's momma. If you had to determine a career today for them today, what do you think your child will be? A nurse/healthcare professional or counselor: her sweetness may yield a heart of compassion for others.

When your child grows up and is a teenager that won't listen to you, what is one piece of advise you will give them? Love the Lord, follow His ways, enjoy the blessings.

Creekside YMCA Opening this Saturday - Woodlands TX Photography

May Kute Photo of the Month - Woodlands TX Photographer

I love looking back each month and to see the beautiful families I have met and what has taken place. Usually I think back and think these sessions have taken place months ago. But they were only a week or two ago.

May brought a lot of babies! Looking back through the blog I had 3 newborns, 1 3 month old, a almost 4 year old, 1 family and a one year old, plus a few older shoots. So, as you can tell it is going to be hard to choose the Kute photo of the month.

So I always go back to my stand by method. What session was the complete package?

You probably remember this newborn shoot. The whole shoot went great. Even though she didn't want to sleep, we still managed to go some really great portraits done of the family and of her. And choosing my favorite of the session, let alone of the month was going to be hard. But I just kept coming back to the ones of father and daughter. I think we all know that there is something about a father/daughter bond. I know that my dad and I have one. He gives me anything I want! But in all seriousness, these two already had it. Pretty amazing at such a young age. And since Father's Day is right around the corner... Thought it was appropriate.

So I choose this portrait for the Kute Photo of the Month of May. She is now almost a month older, and one day will look back at this portrait and will be mortified. But for now, we can all just admire how Kute and little she was.

Well, today was a fantastic ending to another Tippy Toes planner. I have been photographing Miss K since she was a newborn, actually before she was born! And she recently turned 1. I can not believe it. Her mommy and I have been friends before our kids were born, and oh how that seems like forever ago.

Here is a short look back at her 3, 6 and 9 month sessions.

But today we met to finish out her sessions with us. And man, it was so worth it. Miss K is so lovey. I received so many hugs from her. I think that was payment enough. :) Thanks again you guys for making the trip out and enjoy the sneak peak. And I will miss seeing you every three months.

Well, these always intrege me. Who chooses these? And why do we have so many? And why are some of them so weird? I searched for an hour and still have no idea.

But I did want to let you know that May is National Photography Month and Foster care awareness month. Those are just the ones that are relevant to my studio. There are so many others.

Today two sisters came to see me. Oh, this shoot made me wish two things. 1). that I had a little girl and 2). that I had a sister when I grew up. They were so good together and the bond was already so strong. I can't wait to see this family grow through the years.

Miss B was full of personality and I loved getting to know her a little bit. Miss C had just turned 3 months and was so good! She was the perfect model. And is now part of the Tippy Toes family, so you will be seeing a lot more of her. I loved seeing them together. They were the perfect pair.

You have probably seen Miss C on the blog before, but never with her dad. I had the pleasure of meeting her father this morning in the not so great weather at the studio. But we managed to squeeze in some great shots of a really neat thing.

So turns out that Miss C and her dad are both Bulldogs. Of course of different schools, different times, but still. They both lettered, in different sports, but still something to bond over. So they brought their letter jackets along for a fun quick photo shoot. Neat huh?

Well, even though Mother's day is coming to an end, I did want to acknowledge it and wish you all a wonderful and well deserved Happy Mother's day.

I have said it before, but I do have the best Moms in the Woodlands. You guys are so patient, kind, loving and most of all FUN! I couldn't ask for better clients.

So on this Mother's day of 2010, I hope that your husbands pampered you, your children gave you tons of kisses and you took some time for yourself. And if you didn't do it today. Here is a secret thing I do. The day after Mother's day, I do all of the things I really wanted to do on Mother's day. It is My day! I take some time for myself, eat what I want, watch my shows, go shopping, etc.

So feel free to take my idea, especially if you didn't get everything you asked for today.

A long time ago, Miss J and her mommy came to visit me at the studio. Man, has she grown! She definitely has a personality now and is a ton of fun. She is now 3.75 and is the apple of her mom's eye.

As always, I have interviewed her mom, and we have some great stories about Miss J below. But we also have some fantastic sneakys from this morning. We had a beautiful morning to shoot. We were all alone at our location for about an hour, which was fantastic. C, you are going to love these! There were just too many good ones to post.

What is the best thing about your child or each of your children? Miss J is an exceptional little girl in so many ways! She is extremely kind and gentle, incredibly talented and intelligent, and very well mannered and behaved.

What do you find most challenging? I have a tendency to always try to make her happy, which might be spoiling her a wee bit!

Does your child have a favorite stuffed animal? What is it's name? Jade adores all her stuffies!! She has names for each of them, and they all get to take turns spending the day with her!

When do you absolutely just love, love, love your child the most? Quiet moments, silly, etc. When she's curled up peacefully sleeping, or when she lights up when I get home from work and runs to me, arms outstretched. And most of all when she laughs hysterically at her own silly jokes or sings Lucy in the Sky W/ Diamonds acapello- start to finish

What is your child really into right now? Anything ladybug, cat, pink, ballerina, princess, or fairy related, plus Littlest Pet Shop, Strawberry Shortcake, and My Little Pony. Collecting Music Boxes and Blue Glass Birds.

Is there a game or something you do with them? And what do you do to get them to laugh? We get silly all day every day!! The latest phase is having to talk like kitties all day! Meow Meow!

If you had to determine a career today for them today, what do you think your child will be? Pediatric Surgeon repairing cleft palates in Guatemala

When your child grows up and is a teenager that won't listen to you, what is one piece of advise you will give them? Trust your instincts. (But, hey- she's ALWAYS gonna listen to me!! LOL)

Babies the Documentary - Woodlands TX Baby Photographer

If you were watching the news last night, you probably saw a story on this documentary coming out this weekend. It is called Babies.

I found it really interesting. It is a story following 4 babies through their first year of life. One in the US, one in Toyko, one in Mongolia, Namibia. It talks of children's similarities and differences no matter where you live.

But most of all, it has a lot of cute, cuddly video footage of babies. So I thought all of you might be interested in seeing it. Oh and Caden and I watched this story together and he was glued to the screen. Something about seeing other babies faces.

Kept One Eye on Me at All Times - Houston TX Newborn Photographer

If you have been following my blog, you know that I like to think of my clients as part of my family. So I figured, why just post photos of people you don't know anything about. That is just strange. How about I start giving you some information of your new "family" members with your beautiful photos?

We will start with a new addition to the family. Miss S. Born last week. Here is a short interview from her mommy and some sneak peaks from the session.

Is this your first baby (not counting your hubby)? No
Is motherhood going better or worse than you anticipated? Better

What is the best thing about being a new mom? Getting to meet the baby for the first time and introducing her to our 3 year old.
What do you find most challenging? Balancing the needs of everyone in the family.
When was the last time you slept longer than 2 hours? And be honest. Or can you remember? Last night! She sleeps for about 4 hour stretches at night.
What is your favorite thing about them? My favorite thing about my newborn is how she loves to snuggle up with me and sleep on my chest.

Do you have any words of wisdom for other new mom’s to be out there? Relax and enjoy! Things don't need to be perfect, your newborn will love you even if the dishes aren't done or the laundry piles up. Also, try to find humor in everything, even the rough spots. This will help keep you sane. Lastly, remember to take care of yourself. As busy as things can get with a newborn (and perhaps other children in the house), don't forget that mommy needs some TLC, too.
What do you imagine your baby being when he or she grows up? I can't even imagine at this point what she'll be when she grows up.
What are you most looking forward to teaching them or doing with them in the future? I'm looking forward to all the same milestones that we experienced with our first daughter. First solid food, first steps, first words. The joy that she will experience as she explores her world and learns what she is capable of is so fulfilling to me.
What is one wish you have for your baby in the future? My wish for her is that she finds happiness and fulfillment in her life.

I had a great time today meeting this family. I loved the easy going atmosphere in the home. Miss S was just beautiful and I think enjoyed her time in the spotlight. We got a lot of great shots. And it got me out of the Woodlands for the day. Bellaire is beautiful. Thanks again you guys.

April Kute Photo of the Month - Woodlands TX Child Photographer

Another hard month to choose. Every month I think that I have hit the max of photographing all of the cutest kids, but then the next month, here come some more! You momma's really out do yourselves.

I couldn't decide between several this month, but then thinking back on this session, it sold it. It was an easy shoot. Easy kids. Easy everything and then the portraits turned out fantastic. And the best part was that the momma loved them! Actually she really loved them. Even the artsy ones that usually no one ever likes but me. She is even doing a big wall of canvas prints of these in her home! Now all you have to do is tell all your friends about me. :)

So, because I loved the shoot, the kids, the dogs, and the photos. I choose you guys! I choose this photo, as the photo of the month, because of Mr. A's expression. After some coaxing, I got him to loosen up. Somehow talking about his girlfriend did that. And the setting was just beautiful. I took several just breath-taking photos of Mr. A that day. And since he is so close to becoming a teenager, I have to think this may be one of the last kid shoots we might get to do. So I thought his mom might enjoy a big print of him having fun, in the flowers on a sunny morning! Enjoy!

National Infertility Awareness Week - Woodlands TX Maternity Photographer

Oh I'm so embarrassed! I call myself in tuned to the infertility cause and I didn't even know until now! Oh my. Time goes by way too fast and I can not get to my emails fast enough.

But as the saying goes, better late than never....

So this week (April 24-May 1) is National Infertility Awareness Week. As many of you know, Chris and I went through infertility 6 years ago. Infertility is a horrible thing to have to go through, so I have a special place in my heart for all of the families that have and ever will go through this journey (because it is a journey and it will never leave you). Some families have the blessing of becoming biological family. Others will be blessed by adoption or surrogacy. And others will face childless living, which can have it's perks, if you don't have your heart set on children.

Chris and I were blessed with only 5 years of treatments. And then our miracle arrived. We know that everyday we get to spend with Caden is a day that over 7.3 million infertile Americas will not get to spend with children of their own. So yes, he is very spoiled as are most babies of infertile parents.

So if you were ever or are now. I want you to know, you have a friend and confidant in me. We can share scares, stories and most of all help each other through those times that your husband (bless his heart) just won't understand.

Tonight I had the pleasure of having one of my favorite families come over for a quick shoot. The momma wanted to duplicate a collage we made of her son, with photos her daughter, Miss S. We had a great time playing and talking and most of all focusing on just her. Even got to do some hat tricks. You guys will have a lot to choose from.

Snail poop, floating O' and Tea parties - Woodlands TX Child Photography

I was so worried about the weather today, but it turned out to be perfect weather for a beautiful mommy and me session in the backyard. The R family booked two sessions to get both kids some time with mommy and it was so worth it. I hadn't seen them since Mr. E's newborn session and man is he a looker now. I could have shot him all day. Such a personality and those eyes! See for yourself. And the last time I shot Miss R (her 1 year shoot) was awhile ago. She has grown quite a bit and definitely has an idea of what does and does not want to do (the tea party idea was not really a hit). Oh how they keep me on my toes! You guys are going to enjoy these photos. It was great seeing all of you again.

You guys were so into that snail poop. Memories of those times of being together. Priceless.

Bluebonnet Spoiler! - Woodlands TX photography

So Caden and I took this past weekend off and drove up to Austin. The drive was beautiful! If you are still on the hunt for wildflowers, you are in luck! Head out toward Austin on 290 and you couldn't miss them. They are everywhere.

You will have your choice of red, blue, yellow, pink, etc.

But please, don't be one of those families on the side of the road. That is so dangerous! I will tell you the BEST field to stop at. We looked and scoped it out for you.

On HWY 290, right after Winkleman, before Brenham, on the left hand side of the highway, there is a HUGE field of bluebonnets. It must be at least 6 acres. It is labeled Texas beefmasters or something like that. There is plenty of room to pull off on the side of the road and even a small road entrance there, if there aren't a ton of people there. It is a beautiful mix of Bluebonnets and a small white flowers. So all of you that stay at home during the week, head out there before the weekend. Saturday is was packed! And here is how to do it for the best lighting and to get your kids to be half way in a good mood when you get there.

Pack up the car the night before. Put the kids in the car around 7am or earlier if you can. It will take around an hour to get there from the Woodlands. Head out 1488 to 290 toward Austin. You should get there around 8AM. The early morning light will be best for photographs. Pack breakfast or stop along the way, there is a McDonald's in Magnolia and one on 290 at 1488. By the time you get there the kids will be semi-awake and the sun will be up. Then they can run in the bluebonnets and there shouldn't be too many people at the field.

And then after you can drive 5 minutes up the road to the Blue Bell Factory for lunch and a tour. Keep in mind that the factory is not open on the weekends :)

Two monkeys at the lake - Woodlands TX family photographer

Every once and a while I meet truly genuine people that you I feel so comfortable with. This family is one of those for me. I met them last year when I did some portraits of their two little ones, and then later on we did a portrait party at their house, which was a blast!

So last Sunday, we met on a beautiful day to play. It was nice to see the whole family together, just getting to hang out and enjoy each other's company. I love getting to see my clients being at ease in each other's company. Here are two of my favorites. Enjoy!

Miss C's Snake Adventure - Woodlands TX Baby Photographer

Miss C came to visit this morning on a rainy Saturday. She arrived with a lot of excitement, as her mommy saw a baby snake on our sidewalk! So my husband had to heroically go out and scoop it away and put it into the bushes. Who knows what kind it was, he swears it as not a rattlesnake. But it got all of the women fired up about the kids playing in the front yard.

Anyway, Miss C was at the studio for her 9 month session. She did fantastic as always. Ready to show off her 7 new teeth. She kept me on my toes crawling and exploring the studio. Mother's day is around the corner, May 9th! I know that all you moms can agree with me that being a mom is so rewarding, but also the hardest job you have ever had.

March Kute Photo of the Month! - Woodlands TX Maternity photographer

Even though I'm a little behind, I can not believe that it is April and we are done with March! Where did it go. Looking back over the sessions from March, I shot a lot of good looking babies and mommies! It was a hard decision.

But thinking back on the sessions as a whole, I chose Mrs. N and her soon to be little boy. It was a picture perfect session with well over 30 really good portraits. So good in fact that I just printed many from the session to hang in the newly cleaned up studio! She was just too cute and willing to do all kinds of new and creative things. Love that!

So when I had to choose one from this session, that was the hard part. We had location shots, studio shots, shots with hubby, shots alone, happy shots, prop shots, etc. Just beautiful. When I saw this portrait, even straight out of the camera, it was perfection. Not many mommies are as comfortable with their new bellies and bodies as Mrs. N is. I'm sure she will look back at this portrait and wish for that moment of solitude and peace to come back! :) Thanks for the opportunity to take some fantastic new shots! And enjoy your portraits.

A boy and his ball - Woodlands TX Child Photographer

I know I have said this before but time passes by way too fast. The little guy in the middle is part of our Tippy Toes plan, who we met when he was a newborn. And then again at 3 and 6 months. But now that he is over a year old, we met again to do his final session in the plan. He has grown up so much over the past year.

Mr. C loved playing in the sun, chasing his brother and sister and most of all playing with his blue ball. I enjoyed seeing you all again.

Oh and Mr. C's brother gave me the best compliment I have heard in a long time. He said that the last time he came to my studio, it was "Off the chain!" I can't pay for better advertising than that. Happy Easter you guys!

When the bluebonnets align - Woodlands TX children photographer

So this morning, I met one of our VIP clients out at the bluebonnet field. And when the stars (or in this case, bluebonnets) align, you get fabulous lighting, kids, dogs, and in turn Truely Texan portraits.

We had a great time all by ourselves running through the bluebonnets. And their mom did a great job bringing their favorite props to show their personalities. Check out the yellow converse below. We have some great photos of those in the bluebonnets. I couldn't just pick two. Sorry everyone...

And how do you know when the kids and the session is over? Um... This could have been a clue. Love it... Thanks for getting up so early you guys. The portraits are beautiful.

Night owl at 1 week old - Woodlands TX Newborn Photographer

I met Mr. L on a late evening shoot. He was so tiny. Oh how I forget how tiny little babies come. Man I miss those days..

Well, Mr. L was not ready for his debut or very first photo shoot. He wanted to stay awake and watch us work. But eventually, like they all do, he fell asleep, after much coaxing. Big week for anniversaries - Woodlands TX photographer

I will start with the bigger of the two anniversaries.

On Sunday, I will have been married to my hubby for 6 years. Our anniversary is 4/4/04. Hard to believe, but time has flown by. Every day is not a picnic, but there are more beautiful, magical moments than not. And that is all we can ask for. And with our new little family growing with Caden, everyday is filled with life and laughter at our house. So here is to another 6 years of learning about each other, laughing together, and finding true bliss.

The other big anniversary this week, is Kara Powell Photography is turning 2.

Even though I had been taking photos since I was in junior high, two years ago, at bluebonnet time, I decided to get off of my butt and really take a chance at something I really wanted to do. I put out a few flyers for bluebonnet photos and actually got a few takers! I was so excited. And ever since then, I never looked back. Learning new things every day, trying new techniques and styles, finding my way. And now two years later, I have a following and I'm really close to taking this venture full time. Plus I have a niche that I love more than anything! So I wanted to thank all of you that have helped me get here. I definitely couldn't have done it without you. The great part is we are only two years into this. Can you imagine what the next two years will bring! It is going to be out of control! I'm thinking of throwing a baby shower every year for all of my mommies. How fun would that be?

So... with this big week, it deserves some contests! So here goes.

Sweet Dreams Miss M - Woodlands TX Newborn Photographer

I had such a great time today meeting a new family. Little Miss M was just beautiful at 2 weeks old. She was evidently too excited about meeting me and her first photo shoot that she just didn't want to go to sleep. So we have some beautiful family photos of her wide awake. But she did eventually give in and we got some timeless sleeping photos as well. You guys are going to have a hard time choosing. Hope she slept well once I left. Enjoy!

Just had a ball! Thought I would post these for a fabulous mommy I met tonight. We had so much fun taking photos of her and her upcoming addition! Trying all kinds of new and creative things.

Wild about Wildflowers - Children's photographer Houston TX

I have been asked lately about the Wildflowers.

Is this going to be a good year?

Well, with all of the rain, you bet! I am attaching an article I just read. It will help you find some fantastic locations for not just bluebonnets, outside of the Woodlands. (You don't want cookie cutter photos) It always kills me seeing all of these families crammed into the sides of the roads. First of all, it is so dangerous! Second, there are huge fields of flowers if you just drive outside of the city! So take a road trip and see what you can find. You might enjoy it.

I know you are all searching for bluebonnets but branch out! There are so many other kinds of beautiful wildflowers. Unsure what wildflower you are shooting? Well, check this website out, it is organized by color. How cool is that!

And be creative. Everyone doesn't just need to plop down and look at the camera. Take some props, or go exploring and have someone document the hunt. Get close and then back up. Most of all, have fun! The next few weeks should be prime season!

Double Trouble at 9 months - Woodlands TX Multiples photographer

I have been getting some requests for more photos of the twins! So without further ado....

The twins have grown so much! You last saw them at 3 months, but probably recognize them most from their newborn session. Hard to believe but they are a little over 9 months now. Crawling, standing and into everything. I told their mom we had to get some shots before they were walking or we would never get good photos of them together until they were 16 and maybe not even then. :)

So she graciously let me come over and have some fun with my chunky monkeys. And fun we had! Dressing up, chasing them down. Wow! I was pooped. Glad I only had one.

And you guys will have a hard time, as I can only get the proofs down to 85. Sorry. Here are some sneaks.

Inspired in so many ways - Woodlands TX Photographer

As a photographer, I am inspired by many things. Art, advertising, nature, children's innocence, the list could go on forever. But I had to admit, one of my favorite parts of being a photographer is looking around at other photographer's work. Not to copy, but to gain insight into how they see things differently like children, light, exposure. How they attack things like 1 year olds that don't sit still.

I had been blog stalking Michelle for over a year before I talked my hubby into doing family photos with her. And I can tell you that I am 100% glad that we did and he is too. We had a fabulous time (in the rain, and mud I might add). I learned a lot and oh my gosh! The photos! You be the judge. I knew she was fabulous, but seeing my own little family through her eyes was just breathtaking.

It makes it even more special because there are so very few photos with me in them, so wow! Michelle, if you read this. I can not thank you enough for the photos. They truly will be something my family will treasure for a long time to come. And you know that our little family will be back to see you soon.

WPPI update - Woodland's TX photographer

I think I'm finally coming down off of my WPPI high and I can logically tell you about all of the cool things that happened. For those of you that don't know what WPPI is, it is the top Photography convention of the year. This year held in Vegas, it hosted 17,000 photographers. WPPI stands for Wedding, Portrait Photographers International. And man, it didn't disappoint.

This was my first year to go. I was so overwhelmed with the amount of people, and vendors. If you ever go, leave your checkbook at home! I was so tempted to buy everything in site. There were new lights, cameras, backdrops! Oh I could go broke! Here are a few of the cool things that we did.

Attended many, many break outs (learned a ton)
Met many famous photographers like Elizabeth Messina, Audrey Woodard, Kevin Kubota, Vicki Taufer, and Denis Craft
Spent hours in the expo viewing all kinds of new products! Wow!
Met Jill E of the cool new Jill-e photo bags. Even talked her into making purple ones.
Most of all, got a renewed look at our studio! More to come on this....

So, needless to say we had a really great time. Chris saw the passion I had for this business and how we could possibly make this work as a full time business. So he in on board. I am recharged. We got a few little things at the expo to get us going. And next time you see the studio, I think you will be surprised!

Oh boy! - Woodlands TX Maternity Photographer

Yesterday on a beautiful sunny day, I met a lovely new family. They will be welcoming their first new addition in a few months and can't be more excited about it. So over the course of an hour or two, I got to know the parents and soon, I hope we will meet their new little boy.

Of course all of my mamas are beautiful, but few can deny this next this photo. Wow! Many pregnant and non-prenant woman are hating you right now. :)

Stepping Stones - How often should you come see me? - Woodlands TX Photographer

I have had several people lately ask me who often should I come to see you?

Well, you know my answer will be all of the time! I miss you guys when you only come once a year. But honestly, I realize that everyone has a budget and professional photos are not always on that budget. I understand that no one needs photographs, it is just something that we want.

That being said, I wanted to share with you a list that I came up with. It is the really important stages in a child's life that I feel you really shouldn't miss. Having a BS in early childhood education, so I know a little about this. I centered my list around the huge changes that happen in a child's life. So for Caden, I think it is really important that he be professionally photographed by someone at the ages shown below, so that I have really nice images to remember these milestones. And oftentimes trying to take them of your own child doesn't work (trust me on this!)

So in total, that is a suggested 12 sessions throughout a child's lifetime (13 if you include a maternity session). Now I love to do birthday sessions each year for kids, but that is up to you as a family. Seeing a child grow through great photography, year after year is so fantastic.

And how cool would it be to have a family shot every year as well, but now we are just really going crazy!

Caden's first snow storm

People in the North would have a great laugh at this, but our surprise snow storm this week was a lot of fun for some of us. Even though in the Woodlands it didn't stick, it was so beautiful! So we took Caden out to see his first snowflakes. He loved them! Probably was wondering why the rain looked so strange, but he was excited none the less.

Thought I would share a snapshot or two. Hope you got to enjoy the snow with your family as well!

Kute Photo (KP) of the Month - February

Ok, this is quite frighten to me. February is over. Where did it go?

When I was going through the photos over this past month, we didn't take a ton (quantity) but we took a lot of great ones. So it was hard to choose.

But looking back, I wanted to select a photograph from a very special session. I went to the A family's home and shot family photos for them. We were supposed to do them outside, but it was one of those weekends where the cold spell came through, so we moved things inside, which actually worked better I think. They were so warm and inviting. I felt like family. Even though it was a large family, I wasn't a bit nervous. They were so great. We took a ton of photos and even shot some in the kid's rooms, which was really fun. It was really great to see the kids come alive and show their personalities.

I chose this photo because of the interaction and realness it shows. Most family photos are so stiff and stuffy. But you guys allowed me to get you laughing and be playful. I hope that this is more of what your family is like. Goofy is good in my book. Enjoy your print and I can't wait to see you guys again.

Kute Photo (KP) of the Month - January

A lot of photographers do this and I think it is such a great idea and fabulous way to showcase our clients. A little detail on how I choose these photos. It can be a lot of different reasons.

Maybe it was an amazingly hard shot to get
Maybe it was a really surprising reaction or look.
Maybe the family, child or baby is just too cute I just can't stand it!
Maybe the whole session was just picture perfect.

For whatever reason, I will choose one image per month and showcase them on the blog as the Artist's choice. As part of this honor, they will receive a 11x14 print of this image, as well as a $50 gift certificate towards their next session. And the best part is that they will be entered into the 2010 Picture of the Year contest. In the early weeks of January you will help us vote on what you consider the best photo of Kara Powell Photography 2010. So for January, I have chosen the session of Miss C. You have seen her often, as she is part of our Tippy Toes plan. This session was one of those picture perfect sessions I mentioned above.
